Questions and Answers
What is Cub Scouts?
Cub Scouts is a year round program for boys 1st—5th grade. Cub scouts is
fun —but it is fun with a purpose! Through our activities—Den and Pack
meetings, family campouts, Pinewood Derby and other exciting events—our
goal is to help boys grow into good citizens who are strong in character
and personally fit.
What is Pack 285?
Pack 285 consists of boys first through fifth grade from several schools
throughout the South Tulsa area. Pack 285 is supported by Kirk of the
Hills Presbyterian Church as an outreach to the community. Spiritual
development—one of Scouting’s core principles—is an important aspect of
our Pack’s philosophy.
When and where do you meet?
Pack 285 meets at Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church on 61st between
Harvard and Yale usually on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Pack meetings
start at 7pm.
What is a den and when do they meet?
Each grade level is divided into a group of less than 10 boys called
dens. Each den has 1-3 additional meetings per month where the boys work
toward earning patches, pins, belt loops, and other achievement
recognition. Each den decides their own schedule, but all dens meet in
the evenings.
What about campouts?
Pack 285 has 2 family campouts per year, one in the fall and one in the
spring. We generally stay within 1 hour of Tulsa so that families can
day commute if necessary. Highlights of recent campouts include fishing,
canoeing, BB guns, archery, skits, and camp fire sing-a-longs. Webelos
(4th and 5th grade) go on additional overnights. We also encourage
Council organized events such as Mom & Me and the camps in the Summer.
What about other activities?
Pack 285 hosted the Eagle District Cub car races this past spring. Each
den built a cub car and then each scout in the den had a chance to race
it. It was a great success! We also have a Pinewood Derby in January ,
Blue and Gold Banquet in February, and Rain Gutter Regatta every year.
This year one of our den Leaders is organizing the Mom and Me campout in
October.
What makes Pack 285 special?
We are striving to give every cub scout a fun, safe, and complete
scouting experience. Almost all of our Scouts earn their ranks each year
and promote to the next level. A majority of our Scouts earn their Arrow
of Light and move on into Boy Scouts. We promote citizenship, community,
and a sense of achievement in every Cub.
